Residency Training Program Application Information

All applicants are required to satisfactorily complete an ACGME-accredited transitional year after being accepted into the CU Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program OR the first year may consist of rotations that meet the ACGME criteria as listed in the "Program Requirements, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation:" (http://www.acgme.org)

"One year of the four years of training is to develop fundamental clinical skills. This year of training in fundamental clinical skills must consist of an accredited transitional year or include six months or more responsibility in accredited training with inpatient responsibility in family practice, internal medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, or surgery, or any combination of these patient care experiences. The remaining months of this year may include any combination of accredited specialties or subspecialties.

Accredited training in any of the specialties or subspecialties selected must be for a period of at least four weeks. No more than eight weeks may be in nondirect patient care experiences. Training in fundamental clinical skills must be completed within the first two years of the four year training program."

2. Surgery
3. Transitional Year

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation adheres to the institutional selection policies as outlined by CU Graduate Medical Education. The full policy is located on the GME website.

The residency training program uses ERAS for all applications. No paper applications are accepted or reviewed. No partial applications will be accepted for interviews.

Applications must be completed in the ERAS system by October 5th.

The ERAS application must include:

• Personal statement
• Curriculum vitae, including research, work experience, and any publications
• Copy of USMLE or COMLEX board scores
• Dean's letter (MSPE) from an LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) accredited school of medicine or osteopathy in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico, or a copy of the ECFMG certificate. As mentioned, we do accept applications from accredited osteopathic schools.
• Three letters of recommendation from physicians in the candidate's school or elective rotation who are familiar with your recent work. One of the three letters should be from a physiatrist who worked with the candidate on a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation rotation. (Applicants are unlikely to be granted an interview if they have not completed at least one PM&R rotation.)

A completed application file consists of the documentation described in the requirements for entry. When all materials have been received, the applications are evaluated by the Residency Selection Committee to determine which candidates will be interviewed. Applicant interviews are by invitation only. Personal interviews with the faculty, residents, and fellows are an integral part of the application process. The department participates in the National Resident Matching Program process for six (6) PGY-2 positions each year.

 

The American Board of Pediatrics and American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offer a special program whereby physicians interested in specialty certifications in both Pediatrics and PM&R can qualify for admission to the certification examinations of both boards.

Interested applicants must be completed through ERAS (Electronic Residency Applications Services) to the Combined Pediatrics/Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Program. This is a separate application from both PM&R and Pediatrics. The application deadline is October 5th.

3. Deadline for complete application is October 5th. No materials will be accepted after that date.
4. Residents in our program must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or possess the appropriate documentation to allow Resident to legally train at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.
5. No more than five years from graduation from medical school is acceptable.
6. Exemplary medical school transcript is required.
7. Passing of USMLE must be on first attempts, with a score of 200 or above. Those who have failed the USMLE at first attempt will not be interviewed.
8. Completion of the PGY-1 year must be a clinical year in a U.S. accredited hospital, with three months spent in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Director of PM&R must write a letter of recommendation.
9. No observerships are offered.
10. ECFMG certification must be complete before applying.
